New York Ironweed
Vernonia noveboracensis
A striking, upright native plant with deep green lance-shapes leaves and clusters of rich purple flowers. It can grow up to 6 ft making a nice border at the back of a mixed bed, along a property line, or at the edge of a stream. The flowers appear in mid to late summer and draw pollinators into the fall. Deer resistant.
Growing conditions: Prefers moist, slightly acidic soil but adaptable to a range of soil types. Does best in full to partial sun.
Sowing instructions: Plant in fall outside or indoors in spring after a period of cold stratification. Lightly cover seeds with soil, about 1/8” deep.
