Winter Squash "Blue Buttercup"
Curcurbita maxima
An annual maxima squash with a hard, slate colored rind and medium-dry bright orange flesh which is exceptionally sweet and floral. A deep winter squash, coming into its own in storage (usually around the new year), when the squashes blush salmon pink.
Growing conditions: Plant in full sun in well-drained soil, mulching is recommended to retain moisture and prevent fruit rot
Sowing instructions: Direct sow 1-2” deep when all danger of frost has passed. Leave plenty of room for vines to sprawl
Stewardship chain: Bred by a farmer cooperative in Springfield, MA and preserved through the efforts of Heron Breen who obtained his original seed from the USDA GRIN system. It is now back in the world thanks to Heron’s initial efforts and growers throughout Massachusetts. Grown by the Freed Seed Federation.
