Life cycle: annual for eating, biennial for seed production
When beloved Prisma disappeared overnight from commerce, Judy took a small remainder of seed on hand a began a decade of selection work to create Glacier Rose. A gorgeous pink shallot with all of Prisma’s finest attributes including excellent flavor, storage potential, and color.
Growing conditions: Start inside in late winter, transplant as soon as the ground can be worked. Plant in trenches with seedlings 4”-6” apart and rows about 12” apart. Alliums like fine textured, rich soil and consistent moisture. Decrease watering a couple weeks before harvest, typically in August.
Sowing instructions: Start inside, plant seed 1” deep. Maintain root depth when transplanting.
Stewardship chain: Bred by Judy Owsowitz of Terrapin Farm in Whitefish, Montana from the once celebrated and now extinct F-1 hybrid ‘Prisma.’
Any purchases of this seed include royalties for Judy Owsowitz’s work on this variety.
