Recipe for Seed Garlic Fertilization Soak
Planting garlic can be as easy as pushing cloves into the soil anytime after the autumnal equinox and before the ground freezes. However, if you’re looking to give your garlic an extra boost, an overnight soak in a the recipe below is a simple, effective step that many consider to enhance root development, nutrient uptake, and disease resistance.
Fertilization Soak Recipe
Ingredients:
1 gallon of water
1 tablespoon of liquid seaweed extract (either homemade or store-bought)
1 tablespoon of baking soda
1 tablespoon of fish emulsion
Instructions:
Combine the water, seaweed extract, baking soda, and fish emulsion in a 5 gallon bucket, stirring until fully dissolved.
Separate the garlic cloves from the bulb, taking care not to damage the basal plate, which is essential for root growth.
Submerge the cloves in the solution, ensuring they are fully covered, and let them soak for 12 hours, preferably overnight.
After soaking, remove the cloves, allow them to air dry for a few hours, and then proceed with planting.
Planting Guidelines: Plant garlic cloves about 2 inches deep, with the pointed end up, spaced roughly 6 inches apart. Mulching with straw, hay, or another organic material will help protect the cloves during winter and suppress weeds.
